The connectors in this category, as detailed in MIL-DTL-55116, are a series of five and six contact (rigid and non-rigid) electrical connectors (plugs and receptacles) for use in audio frequency circuits with a 60 volts maximum potential and 0.5 amperes maximum current. The M55116 series have become the standard connectors for audio accessories and control in most western portable and vehicle mounted radio telecommunication equipment. With a variety of cable/panel mounting and contact terminal options, the M55116 easily accommodates most audio and control applications. Cable mounted variants fit five cable sizes between .165†and .320†in diameter and feature a wire spring strain relief (option). All connectors in the series feature a rugged, waterproof construction and are designed to operate in atmospheres between sea-level and 10,000ft. Different contact configurations may include solder terminals for discrete wiring, or support insulation displacing crimp terminals for T-2049 tinsel cord typical in retractile handset/headset cables. Other options include the standard corrosion-resistantsteel or lightweight glass-filled nylon connector bodies.
